A world wrought by constant change,
Millenniums of seeds and eggs;
What law has made our paths cross?
My head turns free, pivots on axel-bones
And something in brain sense, tells me
Birds and flowers, know the answers
That hide in early-autumn vapors;
These are my first of September thoughts.

Foxfire, burning in moonlight
Has lit the entrance way
For a burglar goldenrod,
That jimmied the garden gate
While I was asleep...
Its feather yellow crest
Waves, in untaken air space
Above carmine geraniums;
Just below an opal-blur-
Translucence of whirring jade,
Seen in the wings of a ruby throat;
These are my first of September things.

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
