Whisperlings Of Autumn

My bones chill in the knowing.
Returned is this forever-awkward season
That can get inside your very soul
Creating darkness and despair
Only if you let it.

So like an awkward teenager is she,
Simply just trying to find her way.
Violently rushing to swell river bellies
That bulge their overflow to the sea.
Dark, deep, chaotic pools spill over
The testament to her urgent tears.

Down mountainsides she slides in scream,
Grabbing limbs, stripping bark,
Ripping crusted, hard ground with
Such school day’s screech.
Until finally every crack is made.

Her tendrils grab hold
Easily leaving covered death in her wake.
No remorse, or conscience,
Splitting everything in her path.
Crusted shores and roots
Become muddy piles of tinder,
Bearing witness of her passing.

I often wonder what angered her so
That she rages to the sea without
Leaving me her untold story?

My bare feet so covered in mud and murk,
Confirm the reality of this moment in time
But the scene above me is simply heaven.
I feel absolutely naked in its splendor.

Overhead is always such a mystery to me.
A never-ending canvas rioted in unknown colors
From a palette only one would own.
This vision far outdoes the chaos raging below me
On this dark, gray, pending September night.

Soon enough she will cover this mountain,
It's very heart and soul, and anyone on it.
Leaving us all a little barren,
But her residue that is the why.
Leaves of every color, and what is now debris,
Hides wreckage, but also such pending wonder.

I guess I stand in awe of nature's chrysalis
Being set for winter, spring, then summer
That will lift even the darkest shroud
Bringing new birth, and joy to all.

I want to thank Janet Marie for the inspire, for I too headed up to my mountain river,
and my poetic silence such as it is, finally broke.

you and me both girlie.

enough love stayed behind to make us feel at home.

Sharon

She inspired you, and you have inspired me.  We have no raging rivers right now...everything is dry...but there is beauty in my mountain anyway, all ways.  I think I may go for a little ride.

I felt a hint of a whispering Willow in this one, along with the autumn color changes, the magic of Mother Nature bursting forth and flowing past us each time she changes her wardrobe.

Well, if that's just ramblin' Sharon, that's the most beautiful ramble I've read in a long time. Incredibly vivid and descriptive. You captured the "awe of Autumn" brilliantly. I loved this.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

Actually the leaves are still pretty much still on the trees here except higher up where I was that day.  We are finally getting our due rain.  The lack of rain and record heat, heated our waters so badly in B.C., that it has reduced the salmon in runs to an all-time low, by killing the fish.  Not a good thing for consumers or our industry.

I know some of you folks have temperatures in the 80's, 90's, and some the 100's over the summer but this global warming is killing us.  We are used to mild summers here, in the range of about low-mid 70's and we find that nice, with the occasional 80's day.  No one has air-conditioners here, so when this heatwave hit, we didn't have enough supply for the demand so people ran to anywhere cool, (was sure good for our economy they said, everyone spent!) I now own 5 fans which I will sell if summer is normal next year. Bids?

Thanks so much for you time in reading this, I have little time to write much it seems and words are hard to find.

Happy Autumn to you all~

Thank you for your reply Mysteria...I found it enjoyable and interesting...where though, do you live?  I used to go salmon fishing in upstate NY, right near Lake Ontario... a lovely little town called Oswego...(sp?) not that I could have brought one in, as they are so big, but it was fun watching everyone else fish and yell, "FISH ON" which alerted everyone else to pull their lines out of the water and allow him his day in the sun.

Love Salmon but as in everything, there must be balance, and unfortunately some don't see things that way.  Without one, there won't be the other...and if they haven't learned that by now, perhaps they will when it's way to late.  Everything within moderation, keeping in mind, that we are visitors here, and we must leave this place a little better then when we found it.

It sounds like you live in a lovely area and would love to hear more about your home sometime.  Thank you Mysteria and have a great weekend.

Lee, I don't know the place you are mentioning back east but then we west coast people like to think we have the best salmon too     I am on the West Coast, on Howe Sound, and live on the side of a mountain in the  Vancouver area, of British Columbia (by the way, the most beautiful province in Canada.)  Out here fishing is not only a sport but an industry. The salmon is a forever prevalent symbol that is carved here by the aboriginal peoples here, and brings in big dollars yearly.  This year will not be good for our fishermen.  Thanks for asking.

Sharon, this was a great write and inspiring, too.  I always get so homesick when I get a scent of autumn.  Yes, I smell it, too, although here in Texas, the smell is very faint and I only catch it once every other year or so.  But, this poem brought back much feeling and touched all my senses reminding me of a day in Ohio when I looked at the sky and smelled autumn in the air.   .....jo

Yes! Yes!
Here in lies the answer to why we should not lament..."pending wonder"

Excellent poetry throughout the piece, Mysteria....

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
