Writing for salvation
Oh heaven above, bless the writer
For the beautiful addiction to words,
The spirit must believe in the gift
Flowing in genuflection of divine reflections.
Oh God, I pray for a solution
That does not lead into starvation
For the nourishment You give
Must be physical and spiritual,
Mental inspiration of lifting spirits.
Angelic brothers and sisters elevate any doubts,
The worth of a writer of any human language.

Writing for survival
Others have tried to censure me,
To silence the therapy of my worth
But the spigot had to be opened
To seek the sanity of human reaction,
Spontaneous combustion of intellectual ideas
Flowing from independent thinking.
May the force grow stronger
Surviving in sheer willpower.

Writing for that song
Singing into my heart
Beating in me those stormy words
That springs upon sensual music
Inside emotions felt by all of humanity,
Trying to survive in the idiom of love
In the introspection of peaceful coexistence
Bringing souls together in harmony.

Writing from determination
The mirror sees a weak man
Beaten down from time’s abuse,
Terminated “At Will” into depression.
The seed must grow and crack the shell
Germinating the ugly frog into a prince
Fantasy of an American dreamer
Battered in smiles of success
Like a star spangled banner.
Nightmare of frustration
I have to survive.

Writing for sunshine
Flowering of infinite floral fragrances,
Rainbows of sparkling crystal chandeliers,
Floating mind of exquisite landscapes,
Blanketing love of smiling faces
Cuddling softness of your lover’s kiss.
Peaceful tranquility, ocean waves rolling in
Winds of free expressions of writer’s dreams
Wishing to share the love of words
In creating perfection in your mind.

Writing for myself
Haunting words of one’s profession,
Horrendous struggle inside dictionaries
Fighting for enlightened preservation,
The tears of emotional duress
Falling on a paper of love
Sharing your most cherished possession
In a portrait of mental illustrations,
Failing to reach you, my ultimate fear
To have touched you, my ultimate conquest.

D.Lester

You have touched me with this, as you have touched on so many reasons why I write.  Thank you!

This is amazing and brought to mind one of my favorite quotes (there are many) if I could share it. Thanks for the read.

the quote is:

"Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things", --T.S. Eliot. 'Tradition and the Individual Talent', 1919
