Just decided to be a dictionary for a change. I Am A Dictionary You look into my folded pages- Looking for knowledge Looking for the meaning of colorful words. Good old Daniel Webster thought it would make life easier if we all could understand the English language. I see you are looking for the meaning of Punk or Punke Pronunciation:Pungk. Turn my pages back in time and we will learn the meaning of this fascinating word. Shakespearean slang punke is a word for prostitute. Updating to this modern era punk refers to followers of punk culture and music. In prison slang punk in street culture ... it refers to a male who is treated as a sexual submissive. Punk rock came into being in about the year of 1980. Largely it was pertaining to a musical movement of that time. At one time I must say you could not find me (punk) in the pages of the dictionary of 1910, but in 1913 it did appear. The original meaning of punk was a combustible material such as rotten, moldy faggots of firewood or wood with Polyporus fungus growing on it. A material for starting fires. As you see the word punk has progressed through the years to have different meanings. 1. Wood decayed, use for tinder. 2. A fungus 3. Artificial tinder 4. A prostitute, a strumpet 5. Followers of punk culture and music 6. An aggressive and violent young criminal 7. A small stub of a cigar. Now in the year of 2004 I will add a new meaning to the word punk. Go through my weathered pages....find the adventure, the beauty and read on into the hidden mysteries of knowledge. Love BonBon |

Bonnie, What an interesting lesson in ameloriation and pejoration. (I only know those two words from a linguistic course I was required to take!!!) It is interesting how the meaning changes over the years. Thanks for bringing this about! Enjoyed very much. msicellanea |
