Concentrating on the tree Missed seeing the forest deep Concentrating on the moon Didn’t see the sky of stars Concentrating on the smile Couldn’t hear the laughter Concentrating on the tear Never understood the crying What makes a poem, Is it just the intent or content? See the single tree Notice not the forest crowd That sway together. See the glow of moon Rising quickly full and proud, What of stars gather? See the bright of smile Notice not laughter in air That comes soon after. See the flowing tear On silken cheek that flows there, Know not the matter. What makes a poem, Is it the meter and rhyme, Or the form of the line? When it is a poem, what is the cause? How do we know, Just a feeling or must they follow poetic laws? When the words gather If prose or poem does it matter? If sadness of elation As long as it stirs any emotion And touches us, Does it matter the focus? Gloom |

Good question, Professor. It's rather like blind love; one sees/feels the good or the bad (whichever chosen)yet can be oblivious to the rest, the forest. I believe it is the poet's emotion that makes a poem a great poem--not necessarily what is seen. Perhaps, the content may not seem emotional. The poetry is the product of the poet's emote. In contrast, how can a painter paint without touching the canvas-how can a poem be created without purpose or emotions? Look at VanGogh. Anyone could have painted the field, the stars, but it was his temprament that made his work, his own. Interesting write. (HOping this makes some sense... miscellanea |

Thank you, miscellanea, For the thoughtful response, How kind of you to analogize my words to a master painter, Almost makes me want to pick up the brush again myself. Thank you, Choshi Pleased you enjoyed. Gloom |
