I hear echos on nearby loon lake at night and feel myself fall as the sun dips into the bay, within the touch of a memory. A summer’s night long ago, caught in a driftwood moment, capturing my downcast eyes and heart. I make circles in the sand with my bare feet, feeling the heat of the day lingering all the way up and down my spine, as if your breath had reached my neck in a salty taste of flesh, infusing me with permanent pleasure. Your hand, your inner warmth flowing, caressing my shoulder softly as you turn me 'round to face you in the salty air. A feathered touch, smoother than silk yet sensibly strong, resilient, capable of holding the world at bay. Waves of passing time took you away. There is not much for me to say today except, I miss you. And as the ebony of midnight cries forth from the sheer force it takes to push the heat of day away, a lone loon glides gracefully by, serenely, beyond the willows that line the sandy bay. Just beyond my reach, in the sharing of a lover’s echo, I recall the sound of your voice. I miss you more on the warmest nights, more than in a chilling mist. heard the loons at mandan lake years ago.. thought they were wolves way off.. hollow fear in a voice yet they were bragging this is an image of that vibe...way cool |

ah... very nicely done ma'am.. well told and holds both the sense of nature and how it effects and plays into our lives/memories.... as well as the emtional ripples of honesty that spread along the lines.. letting us know there is more to the story..and that it is ok to leave it unsaid.. ok for us to just know there is more... bravo! |

Many years ago, in the morning mists of New Hampshire, a reporter, ghosting in a canoe to tell the tale of NH loons, was stopped by a voice stating "Hold it right there." It was the "Loon Ranger." I awoke this am to a calling loon. I smiled to find one in your writing. Well done!! KJ Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

At your service, milady. At one time, NH loon pairs were numbered around 500. State fish and wildlife people realized that nesting pairs had dwindled to around 250. As usual, there were the usual cries of every thing from "let's help the loons" to "leave them alone." When a reporter from the Wall Street Journal went up to see for himself, he attempted to discover a nesting pair (thus interfering with their habitat). He was stopped by a state ranger(the aforementioned "loon ranger"). There was no mention of Tonto, Silver or Scout. There was a citing of two loons who mistook a puddle in a Baltimore shopping mall for a lake and dropped in for a nosh. However, loons need to taxi up to flying speed, hence they need deeper water than a puddle. Eventually, they were safely captured and transported to Chesapeake Bay. End of loon lesson.
