There's a Devil Waiting |

As the first snow storm of winter lays a blanket on the ground- And the family by the fireplace is so prone to gather round; And the moon, a ghostly clipper, sails across a cloud tossed sea With the devil as the skipper, on her quest she's seeking me. As wolf down from rimrock, gaunt, and grey, and grim- In the pen a fatted yearling, a repast reserved for him- As the years and circumstances, around our lives do roll- There's a devil in the darkness, and he's hungry for our souls. We've a bent for self-destruction, I believe 'tis plain to see- As we cast aside all safe-guards, in an effort to be free... And we plunge headlong, and heedless, in the race to meet our fates- And forget that in the shadows....there's a devil who awaits. You will see him in the bottle, as you drain it of the dregs- And see his lonely victim, in the gutter, as he begs- In the lines upon some mirror, ere his candy you consume- You may glimpse his evil visage, as you hasten to your doom. You will hear his evil laughter, as you try to quench the fires- Which within your body's burning, lust, and passion, and desires. And you'll reap a full accounting, your due, and that in spades- When the doctor sadly tells you, "I'm afraid that you have AIDS". Ah, the flame of youth is fading, and only ashes left- Of your life, and joy, and future, in a moment you're bereft- As the bitter tears of mourning, begin streaming down your face- You will hear his gloating laughter, "Ah, you fool, I won the race". ------------------ ~GS~ |
