I told you in the courtroom-
The day you sentenced me-
You've just condemned an innocent-
You should have set me free.

You'll hang me on the twenty first-
Your rope my neck will crack-
But on the nights the moon is full
Just watch! for I'll be back.

You'll see me in the window-
Just before you go to bed-
I'll whisper from your pillow
Where at last you'll lay your head.

I'll say, "Your day is coming-"
You legalistic hack-
You knew that I was guiltless-
I told you I'd be back."

You'll see me in the mirror-
When you go to brush your hair-
When you reach into the closet-
For your coat, you'll find me there.

As you start out for your office-
Walk along the railroad track-
You'll recall my body swinging-
From the lonely gallows rack-

Till at last you'll take your pistol
And you'll take the triggers slack-
Your last sound will be my laughter-
Judge, I told you I'd be back.
