TURN TO STONE

A child peers deep through the sky.
A twinkle gleams across his eye.
Dire ambition lost in a stare
Where even imagination wouldn't dare.
A world, his own to perceive,
Suddenly seems more than just make believe;
Or trees or flowers, sands and stars,
Colors and shapes or candy bars.

Realization, the first fatal step persists
The acknowledgment that life, itself, exists.
Luring us to explore, senses fulfill,
Till we derive at thoughts and hope and will.
Refuting a world where we could safely dwell,
While it slowly fades under this spell.
In the ashes of sleep, a glowing ember,
Till it's just a dream we won't remember.

Passion calls for the sacrifice,
Innocence, the going price.
Knowledge, the fruit curiosity gains.
Reality is all that remains.
Emotions arise in spiritual bemuse
Of Antiquity and her outdated views.
For the spirit of life with youth is bold,
You just never see it until you're old.

Candor, the lost hope of paradox,
Tightens the chains and clasps the locks...
Which bind us into this realm of life,
That imprisons the soul in shackles of strife.
With anguish and pain, heartache and remorse,
Disease and death to follow in due course.
Where a daydreaming child is certainly prone
To blink his eyes and simply turn to stone.

Michael Anderson

For all behind was dark and drear,
And all before was night and fear.
How many hours of night or day
In those suspended pangs I lay,
I could not tell; I scarcely knew
If this were human breath I drew.

Lord Byron

Michael; This poem is exquisitely written. It sounds and feels like the dark night of the soul. St. John of the Cross wrote a book with that title. I've been there and the only way I found out, was up and through prayer. Ellie

Michael~
This was very deep~

For the spirit of life with youth is bold
You just never see it until you're old.....

Where a daydreaming child is certainly prone
to blink his eyes and simply turn to stone...

Thanks for sharing this Michael

oh nooo I feel myself turning to stone as my childhood dreams vanish into thin air and I'm left wondering where the time went... This was a great poem Michael sorry for the kind of lame humor in the begining of the reply but I'm in a good mood for a change, and the subject of the poem was so deep I'm trying to make light of it I suppose

 Mystical being
which makes ink flow
Surround me in
your incandescent glow
Fill my brain with
thoughts and rhyme
As I try to capture
but a moment in time

Ellie, I will definately check out that book - and keep praying as well.  TY

tracie, I'm glad you found this enjoyable.

Joel, thanks for the read - Glad I can inspire you.

Janet, Stone shouldn't bleed either...  Alas, what does that make me?

Troy, glad it reached you...

StarrGazer, I didn't see that as lame humor.  Was exactly what I was trying to portray in the poem.  What happens to childhood dreams and innocense?  What good is living when we die emotionally?

Irish Rose, Indeed we all do...

i loved this one

from which evolves the light...
