I'm not sure if this qualifies as "dark" or not, but....

Vanished

Rough hewn spires
of blackened stone
rise into a blood red sky
Pinnacles disappearing
in dark undulating clouds

From abandoned rooms
broken windows stare
upon bleak deserted lands
As if watching for the return
of vanished occupants

A society long gone
banished into history
by unknown forces
No one will ever know
the cause of their destruction

Was it by their own hands?
The final grisly outcome
of some horrendous war
fought in eons past?

Perhaps they chose to leave
Reaching to the stars
in search of something more
Living a glorious existence
on the shores of another realm

The only remains
of this unknown people
are the silent sentinels
Forever standing on the plains
of a long dead world
circling a forgotten sun

Thank you very much everyone

I do like to experiment with different themes from time to time, and then there are times where something just hits me out of the blue. That's how this poem came to be.
