Only two of Walter's children, Were well known to me, My grandfather Horatio, And my Great Aunt Marie. This tale will be about Grandpa, The things he faced in his life, The angel of mercy that saved him, A reprieve from the strife. Horatio was born in Mullumbimby in 1895, He was the first of seven children, He spent his youth on dairy farms, Until he enlisted in WW1. He enlisted in 1915 only aged 19, He was a Lance Corporal in the 42nd Battalion, Who served their time in France, Serving his queen and nation. Horatio was wounded in his right leg, So, so far from home, The leg was all difused with bullet and shattered bone, In pain, in fear, so far from home, so alone. The gangrene set in unforuneately, And off his leg did come, Amputated half way up the thigh, Sent home a legless hero for all he had done. He spent many months in Hospital, Recovering from his injury, When he met an angel sent from above, To ease his misery. Her name was Elsie Palmer, Friends visiting another soldier, She kindly spent some time with Horatio, It made his recovery a little less harder. She soon began visiting him everyday, They shared their hopes and dreams, She admired his quick sense of humour, So cheeky and playful he seemed. Horatio and Elsie married in 1920, They lived in Dutton Park Brisbane, They had two children Lorna and Ron, Born at home despite the pain. Horatio worked in Brisbane's General Post office, He had a wooden leg the rest of his life, But it was his sense of humour, That beguiled us all and his wife. I have fond memories of him, Always making us laugh, Photos playing the fool, Wearing silly scarf's. Horatio got sick in the 1970's, The horrible Alzeihmer's disease, He was reduced to a mere vegetable, Nothing much seemed to please. When I was about five, My grandmother and grandfather were both in full care homes, My grandmother was going down hill fast, We thought they deserved one last visit alone. We drove Grandma to Grandpa's old age home, He was still sort of lucid then, I still have the memories of their last visit, Crying and saying goodbye. Grandma died when I was five, Aged 79, Grandpa followed when I was 10, aged 82. The daughter Lorna is gone now as well, The Great Aunt Marie I mentioned, My Dad is alone now, the last of his line, But what a wonderful sense of family, love and history he will take with him. Hope this wasn't too long or boring for anyone < !signature--> May the world hug you today, With it's warmth and love. I pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart, That tell you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world, Wishing you well and wishing you love...... ~Isis~ (Goddess - Sovereign of the Spirit) [This message has been edited by Isis (edited 02-27-2000).] |

Lisa, this is really brilliant. You have followed the family line all the way from the descendants you had no chance to know all the way down to the ones you did. This is a great piece of work you have done...one that you can be proud of and pass along to your descendants so that they they may add their chapters as time goes on. They will certainly appreciate your effort and hard work creating it. I certainly do |
