This is a story about my great great grandmother Esther Tulk (nee Warner).

The Warner family were tired,
Tired of Old England,
They saved their pennies,
To board a ship heading for the Great Southern Land.

They were free settlers,
A hardworking family,
So Esther, her siblings and parents,
Were off across the blue.

120 days sailing upon the sea,
So sick from this wretched journey,
Esther stood at the rails thinking,
What will be in Australia waiting for me?

'Land ho!' the first mate called,
They could see Australia at last,
A world of new beginnings,
A life so different from the past.

The country all looked weird,
So different from old England soil,
The sun it seemed so much hotter here,
Esther felt as though any moment she would boil.

The earth itself a different colour,
Had a reddish hue,
When back home the soil was dark and brown,
Fertile and yielding through and through.

Esther's Dad was so excited,
He'd buy a farm and reap wonderous harvests,
As a free settler out here he could do anything,
A new start and he'd be the best.

They stayed for a few weeks in old Sydney town,
Learning about their new country,
Such strange yet beautiful animals and birds,
Such flora, so unique, how could it be?

Esther and her siblings were warned constantly,
About the convict element,
Do not talk to or even look at them,
Each one of them hell sent.

Stay tuned for Part 2..

May the world hug you today,
With it's warmth and love.
I pray it whispers a joyful tune in your heart,
That tell you there is a friend sitting in another corner of the world,
Wishing you well and
wishing you love......
