Visitors to Hell Charlee died that day D-Day when thousands landed on distant shores a slaughter unimaginable on freedom's alter of sacrifice so young, to give so much a battle won, for freedom a generation past victory against evil white markers, endless rows foreign soil the ultimate price a soldier's oath so many fell on a June day far away courage tested, surpassed Freedom lives Charlee died that day a visitor to Hell [This message has been edited by Danny Holloway (edited 02-18-2000).] |

Sad piece Danny. I always feel so sorry for those young men dying alone so far from home. It doesn't seem fitting for a hero does it? Well done Danny. At night the moon became a face, I met the spirit of life, the spirit of love and music. And I am better for it. ~Isis~ (Goddess - Sovereign of the Spirit) |

i agree with micheal-unexpected subject. incredible piece. made me think of the movie-saving private ryan-i think that movie is one of the best war movies-it didn't glorify the aspects of war-made it more real to me being from the younger generation. a great tribute. |

Thanks everyone for the nice responses. About the Title: In a book written about the D-Day Invasion, there is a chapter entitled "Visitors to Hell". That day on Omaha beach, 50,000 men went ashore, 6,500 were killed. An incredible loss of human life, young men dying all around. and yes, danni, Saving Private Ryan is a pretty accurate depiction of that day. Thanks again for your comments. young men sign their lives away to our country everyday, and i dont think we give them the respect they deserve. we take it for granted that they are there to defend us in our times of need. this was a nice piece of tribute to those men that have already given their lives for us. dont take the others for granted. its's as demi moore said in "a few good men", "they stand on a wall, and they say nothings going to hurt you, not on my watch." well done danny. |

So sad, and I think that very thought was going thru their minds when they found themselves in that place on that fateful day. We are going to be visiting hell and we must kill them before they kill us. Thousand of men coming face to face with no other desire or purpose than to kill each other. I talked to a veteran of WWII and he told me at first they were nervous and scared, but as they saw there buddies falling all around them, they became determined to prevail. He said they all realized that none of them would be going home until the battle was won, and of course many never made it home to their loved ones. My second son is in the army in Germany and I hope he never has to go thru something as tragic as this. James |
