Not So Old I cannot say that I am old of heart and mind But aged are the sparkling dreams I left behind Those youthful visions have been carried by the streams And rest along the banks of someone else’s dreams I cannot say that life was so unkind or cruel For many is the time I played a willing fool And thus I learned how bitter are the lessons taught And when disarmed, how futile are the battles fought Now only memories remain of battle scars And twinkling is the purpose of the evening stars Though now and then in looking back on life I find That dreams have kept me not so old of heart and mind Elizabeth Santos April 30, 2004 |

Liz...you bring the wisdom of age to the wonder of youth....and together they make beauty that the young can't comprehend. |

Though now and then in looking back on life I find That dreams have kept me not so old of heart and mind So true for me, too, Liz. I sure am glad to see you posting more. I love to read your poetry. Hugs, Ethel |

Those youthful visions have been carried by the streams And rest along the banks of someone else’s dreams I love these phrases. Hopfully new visions flow down the stream into our waiting hearts. Susan |

Elizabeth You have revealed (here in this poem) the importance of beauty that is more than surfactant. That is very important (to me). The beauty of wisdom and memory, this proves that you are "not so old" I believe Whitman also thought this way... *"Women sit, or move to and fro—some older, some young; The young are beautiful—but the older are more beautiful than the young." I just love your end stanza.... "Now only memories remain of battle scars And twinkling is the purpose of the evening stars Though now and then in looking back on life I find That dreams have kept me not so old of heart and mind" excellent poetry, enjoyed ---------ice ><> *Walt Whitman - Beautiful Women. Thank you all for your kind remarks. This was written as a challenge to myself, to write 3 verses in the meter of the first line. Nan can tell us what it is. It was a little difficult to stick with it and many times I was counting fingers Thank you again Liz |
