in the shadows

You ask what goes through my head
when I awake realizing I am not dead,
and what unnatural force
gets me to drag my sorry butt out of my bed;
I don't have an answer that would work for you,
or for any other person that I know,
I keep going on just because
I know one day I won't.
One day I'll just stay there,
stay until I die,
then I'll need a stronger sense of will
to make me come back to do this all again;
every step I take,
for good or bad,
makes me that much closer
to the point of letting go,
but every time I've thought I'd hurry it along
I find some silly little reason to go on.

This morning,
I walked into the cinema
to watch a movie more frightening than the movie makers know,
a show about the inevitable climate shift
that comes around in intervals to reset all our clocks.
A little girl,
barely two feet tall,
come to watch a cartoon ogre
with her mother and sister all standing ahead of me in line,
was shocked at my appearance,
not exactly fine Sunday go to meeting form,
and speechless she just reached out her arm,
pointing at me wordlessly;
without thinking I acted horrified by her and pointed back,
a huge bearded mirror of the gruesome face she made at me;
we stood frozen
in unrehearsed Sunday morning tableaux of mutual shock attack,
an eternity of seconds,
while we couldn't go anywhere
because someone else had fumbled with their change,
then I watched something unspoken rearrange itself inside her mind;
she began to giggle in the kind of fit only a child forms,
and for that moment
I was glad I'd gotten up this Sunday morn.

I once was sitting on a beach with my 8 month old son.  A man very similar to your appearance walked by, and of course my son was thrilled. he cooed and laughed and reached out for the man. The man stopped in his tracks and had a look of shock on his face.  "They usually cry and run away from me?!"
I replied, "Well, for him, you are a wonderful sight" and I let him crawl up to the man.
The man then said," Little man, you just made my day."

Children are wonderful.

  each day presents small gifts, yes?  And in such moments we know joy.  Enjoyed.
