I found today in a second hand store
a book on a life lived before
and I flipped through the pages
with an eye for detail
and a bag full of rusty old coins.

The edges were worn,
the cover was torn,
the colour had faded to grey,
and then I remembered
I’d read it before
and already had paid the price.

But I pulled out a penny to pay the man
though he hadn’t yet asked for my thoughts
so the penny, like love, fell to the floor
and I planted a smile on my face.

I went back home and packed up my heart
in a red velvet box with a clasp
and placed it under my double bed
as a gift should a stranger pass by.

A precaution, you see, in case he should think
I died in a daylight raid
but I’m still alive walking around
with a brick in the place of my heart.

And when I get back it’ll be quite flat
with no blood left to turn about face
so maybe I’ll stick with only a brick
cold and hard and lifeless inside
to keep me sane and grounded in life
until I am no longer me.

However, the moral of this silly tale
is perhaps of no consequence
when the heart of the matter is under a bed
beating alone with no phone
to dial love up and call it back home
from wherever it went to be free.

That’s it!  It’s life that squashes a heart
and bleeds out the life-blood of soul!

Not so silly, I think, Helen.     &

No, perhaps not, Jo, but it helps sometimes to wrap things up in silliness.  Thanks for the read.

laughter is the best medicine...yeah...well at least we can giggle at ourselves after the worst is over, right?

And I missed your reply, Dixie - sorry.  Yes we always laugh - it's one of the best cover-ups I know of.

Helen, there is in you an awareness that had to have been expensive to learn and certainly heavy to hold.  Your ability to treat it lightly speaks volumes for your strength.  As always, I enjoy reading your work.  Thank you for being with us and for sharing your thoughts.

Icebox - I guess there is a price for everything in life but if awareness has come to me it is only through love and love, of course, has it's own price which it demands.  I cry more times than I care to think about but too I can laugh - mostly at myself because I try to understand so much that is always out of my reach.
Thank you for the read.
