A Home With "Atmosphere" |

Even I as a child saw the beauty of stone. Chrysoprase, I think it was, known to soothe the heart, dispel the blues, enhance one’s wisdom, bring peace if used. It was a gift from a woman of years, a woman I’d grown to love, despite fears of the way that she looked, those wrinkles, that hair, gray and messy, and no teeth did she wear. This woman named Tean lived with us there in a house full of old folks out in somewhere. Our house, our home, it had “atmosphere” ‘yond past what a child could compare. When Tean died there I knew one thing sure that the gift of the stone in that ring I adored. I treasured it always, but Mother knew best. She took it and hid it in her special chest. When I grew much older, I wore a prom dress and Mother pulled out the treasure chest. Said, now it’s time, you are old enough now to dawn this lovely and wear with your gown. The honor bestowed from the wearer to me was one beyond words and I felt all aglee. I delighted in gift that Tean gave free from her heart with all love so tenderly. But the beautiful green stone, I wore only once. When evening finished, I laid the ring on a shelf. And the house full of “atmosphere” swallowed it up. Chrysoprase treasure, lost to the ghost. Now, my Mother has searched for over a year for her wedding ring and ruby which have disappeared. It’s useless her searching; I don’t want to scare. They are all gone a’missing in the “atmosphere.” In reality, "Tean's" name was Mrs. Patshaw, and we called her Auntie Pat. She was a resident in my mother's nursing home. We grew up around the old and dying and I think some their spirits still linger." "Tean" was the name of one of the other patients and I used her name instead of Auntie Pat just out of poetic license. [This message has been edited by iliana (06-30-2004 12:23 AM).] |

I'm NEVER going to show this to my Dad... he already suspects that his belongings sprout legs to walk away from whereever he leaves them... he doesn't need verification! *G* I enjoyed this very much! *S* |

Methinks thy living family be not alone! Enjoyed this phantomagorically scintillating write! ~ but 'tis surely a shame that your family treasures are missing. Perhaps if you asked the "atmosphere" nicely for their return... EA |

Excellent write..I so much enjoyed the story of the missing stone... Methinks perhaps you are not alone in that home. ~Smiles & Hugs, Nancy~ Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that. |

Atmosphere is always a blessing to the creative mind. I think in children it bestows upon us a certain sense of drama and flare. In our house growing up the resident spirit's name was George. Many a time I've heard the door open and close, but no one was there. I think too, I shall have to write about the thing in the basement. Thanks for the inspiration. Thanks for the fun read, much enjoyed. Susan Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you. Joy is a state of mind. |

Love this story/poem.... The stone is not lost, it simply exists now outside your present "atmosphere". The energy in it cannot be destroyed, but it can change appearance, the shape of it is displayed nicely in this poem.. enjoyed ------ice ><> |

Oh! I do love to read a good story/poem. You captured me in the beginning...had to keep reading. So interesting this story of the stone and the woman called Tean's. Good jobber, but you always write wonderful words for us all to read. Hugs BonBon |

You bring such freshness and joy to your writing. This is a beautiful tale. I like both the precious value of the stone and your philosophical look at where it is now. Ken Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

What a memory this brought back... a story that I shall share with you later... but the imagery? I saw it all! |

You had me sitting on the floor while you told this story in a chair you know that? I absolutely adore story poems, especially "family" ones, and you dear lady can sure spin a yarn in rhyme yet! This I totally enjoyed. If you get time I wrote about my gramma's ring (it's a true story too) not sure where it is, somewhere back there I think I called it Never Ending Circle. Anyway, thank you this was truly a delightful evening read. |

jo, I too found this story fascinating. However, I'm not too sure whether it is the home that has the atmosphere or whether we carry it around with us. I've moved and yet I'm followed and we sure are making memories together. It's a long, long, story. |

Honeybunch -- come to think of it...maybe there is some truth in what you say. Thanks for posting! But, I have to say, I left some of that atmosphere there in that house when I left 20 years ago and mom's rings just went missing a year ago (that's 1800 miles away). Things happen here, too, but they are more happy, more magical in that sense. .......jo |
