Louder Than My Breath By: Noah Eaton 6/17/04 They can wash your mouth with soft soap, they can shine your shoes with apple-polish, they can parcel out the sherpherd's land, they can seduce you with the Judas kiss, time after time they can make promises, that you know they just can't keep, and they leave you with a raincheck, while it's flooding out on the streets, where angels are sitting in the park, feeding the sparrows their share of bread, and the bloodhounds angrily bark, but deep in their heads, they know nothing's louder than my breath... I've seen an election rigged, I've noticed the changing of the guards, I've tasted the salt under their tongues, an aftertaste so bitter and tart, every place has its king and queen for a day, every place has its village idiot, who lusts for something more far away, the throne at Potemkin, so he takes the plastic crown, he hears the patriots hail to the theft, and they dance around like rodeo clowns, the cacophony can make anyone deaf, but they ain't louder than my breath... Fortune calls and favors the brave, but behind it there's a crime, truth is forever on the scaffold, but on the throne there's always a lie, he unchaps his lips with banana oil, coats the walls with a whitewash job, and on the TV screen you hear the plate dinner jokes recoil, as the dish washers have the gasconade cleaned off, soon the speculators come knockin' on his door, and he digs his heel like a shovel, shuts the door and fled, the questions and critiques they're out searching for but the newspapers start the presses with fiction instead, yet the propaganda ain't louder than my breath... So the word comes out and friends are told, and their friends jump on the bandwagon too, and the lobbyists rush to their company cars to seize control, of the heretics who have been reading the truth, and the patriot singers swarm upon baseball fields, playing with their hearts like it's an ice cream social, and to the dermatologists you see them yield, where patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels. And as the tanks launch fireworks in this mad hatter's parade, the poster child is in the back seein' red, plastered over in charades and angry tirades, that keep the children tossin' and turnin' in bed, but they still ain't louder than my breath... Little by little the jigsaw comes together, soon the protest babies are out in droves, sweeping the sidewalks in adverse weather, forcing traffic to halt on the roads, still he dims his blinds and out he cries, "Either you're with us, or against us!" and he raises his hand high in the sky, and tethers to the flagpole the dove, as it watches the mastodons of war march away, and the trumpets echo from the west, where the hawks come migrating from night to day, rehearsing their matinee of death, which they ain't louder than my breath... On and on the protesters voices shout, as the reporters speak back condescendingly, and he wears a soft soap smile and steps out, sayin' "I gave them a fair warning!" Well "truth don't come from the barrel of a gun, truth don't come from the mouth of a politician", yet the smoke keeps risin', blindin' the sun, the soldiers possessed by his superstitions, and their parents see prisoners tortured on the TV screen, demanding an excuse to this dread, the radio host replys, "They're just blowing off a little steam!" these chauvinistic words can cut your courage to shreds, but they ain't louder than my breath... It don't matter if you're the deipnosophist it don't matter if you're generally shy, when push comes to shove, we can resist, we can read between the lines, and the story goes on, sometimes remains the same, we go on running through the reparations, I have seen snow and I have seen rain, but slowly I've seen the sun emerge from hibernation, his lies keep rebounding, as he keeps defending, an empire that's on the verge of death, "only cowards insult dying majesty", while the truth finally is freed from its web... . . . . . ...the only thing louder than my breath... "You'll find something that's enough to keep you But if the bright lights don't receive you You should turn yourself around and come back home" MB20 |

Noah, now I know what you've been doing this week! My goodness you said a mouthful! An empassioned write extraordinaire! I could feel my pulse race as you ranted and raved about the lies, deceit, misrepresentations and the injustices! Wow! You don't mince your words. They spill right out of the core of you! You speak what on your mind and in your heart. No one could ever say that you sit on the fence or that your are a dispassionte side-liner in life! Hope you are getting settled in your new home. It's fun exploring the new environs! ~ That's what I'm doing as well! Love you, Angel Boy! EA |
