That Old Plow

What? That plow?
Eye sore you say?
That rusty-boned old plow?
‘Fraid I just don’t see it that way.

You just drive this tractor,
Right around it, you hear?
Just like I’ve gone around it,
Every other year.

One or two crooked rows,
Is just fine in a field.
That plow’s there for a reason,
And it don’t hurt the yield-

To have a few square yards,
Where we won’t be gatherin’ corn.
Yep, that  old plow’s been settin’ there,
Since the day I was born.

Reckon I’ll tell you the story,
The way it come down to me,
And then mebbe you’ll understand,
Why I let that relic be.

Seems my daddy was a-plowin’ here,
When he heard my mamma callin’,
He ran to the house and there I was,
Already born and bawlin”.

Mamma though, was in a bad way,
And she didn’t last the night.
His sister offered to take me in,
But he said we’d make out all right.

So he raised me up fer farmin’,
But he bought us a brand new plow,
And he left this old un a-settin’ out,
Right where you see it now.

When I was ten he told me,
He’d buried mamma here,
In land they tended together,
So he could keep her near.

And now my daddy’s there with her,
And I’ll be here some day.
That old plow is family now,
She’s earned the right to stay!

Whether the story be true or a wonderfully creative piece of writing, I was deeply moved by it!

~ And I'll envoke a host of angels to stand watch over "That Old Plow"!

This has a nice swing to it that is maintained throughout, kinda reminds one of certain country type songs that tell a tale.

Enjoyable read.

Enjoyed this one a lot!  Sometime after the Depression my mother was in charge of making all of the payment on the farm where I presently live.  When she was 15, her parents left her by herself so they could help with family members in a couple of different faraway places.  She only earned $8 a week (I think that was the amount) plus room and board at a restaurant.  It got to the point the bank was going to sell the farm.  The manure spreader that sits out behind my home saved the day.  She sold it  and then was able to make the payments.  Later, when things improved, she bought it back.  The manure spreader, thus, has become an icon in our family history... I enjoyed your creative poem.  It brought back memories...

My goodness! Thank you all so for your wonderful comments.  This poem isn't fancy dancing, but it means a lot to me.  I know people like this old farmer.  They might not know a good poem if it bit them, but they know truth, they know the earth that feeds them, they know the importance of family. That's a lot to know.

Thanks again

What a treasure of a story.  So touching.  It is such a classic write.  I enjoyed it more than you know.  It was fun, and it was sad.  From one end of the spectrum to the other.  Brilliantly written.  This would be an instant keeper.  Thank you for sharing it.
