And a Song Was There All Along

There is so much sound

The air is full can sing
with drain of day
darning children and birds

Someone drags a trashcan filled
glasses and box and leaves and things
and gated garden’s swing I hear sing
as air sucks in the sun and makes a wind chime stop
and listen to the end of day
airplane and train in magic become loud
the music like a lonely ear too proud
to pay attention
suddenly perks and nods

at maddening bat fly by to take
the last small thing in air it ate
could almost hear the snap and crunch
the whirr of wing the light so lost

just a jewel in deep of pool
and a song was there you know
probably all along

I love this, Martie!  I like the way you minimized words, amplifying all the remaining words with sensory images.  Neat write!  Yes, songs are there all along!  Well explored.

Several years ago, I temporarily lost my hearing due to severe infections in both my ears from swimming in water that turned out to be contaminated. It near drove me crazy in that silent world! I appreciate my ability to hear so much more now! Your poem just added to my appreciation!

Summertime fun!

I hear it play...loudly at all times.  Here, a different song, no trashcans, or planes.  Cardinals, bluejays, crickets, locust, wise old owls, coyotes, cattle, dogs, wind in the century old oaks, rolling thunder, and the occasional scratch from an armadillo digging in my wife's planter again after the sun leaves the horizon, wife and kids in the house laughing it up.  Not always the same instruments but always the same song.  And, what a beautiful song it is.  Sometimes I'll sit in the rocker on the porch with a cold beer and just listen...and smile to myself.  Beautiful write.  Simply beautiful.  Now I have the song in my head.  You know how songs do that.

I, too, once lost some hearing, but only in one ear.  It was scary enough.  Along with this song, there are the smells of city or country life as one travels.  Well done.  KJ

Ah Martie...you write of sounds so well..
you are so tuned in to whatever you write about.
So very much enjoyed.
Hugs~

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back

There's no mystery about whether, and it's easy to know where the song was...right where it's always been, in you. Thanks for letting us hear these few bars of it.

This poem is simple, and the imagery is stark for one of yours--but it shows a side of you that is good to see, and that shouldn't fall 100 lines down the list in a single day just because Martie danced to a different tune this time.

So up it goes!

The heartbeat of life around us is such an easy thing to ignore...you capture it and put it to verse. Thank you for listening.
