On Callused Hands Blinded by the hallowed green, fortune beckons and silver gleans for those who wield their foul resolve in laboring men until their spirits dissolve. Long is the road to success in this plight. Where is the treasure bedecked in light? I've traveled this road so many miles and missed so many of my family's smiles. I've realized now the price I've paid to reach this treasure that has begun to fade. Sustained desperation grips the soul of all weary men who pay this toll. Endeavor to pass the opulent gates of those with hands never laden in weight. Only to find our path is barred by wretched dogs who toil discard. Lap at the blood of the weary one, leave him to fall with the setting sun. Bask yourself in reflected glory. Amuse yourself with your sacrificial story where strife holds hope strangled in hand and misery cloaks your savage land. Tell us where you ever found the strength to overcome oppression and walk success' length. Lay awake in the light of the ivory moon. Choke on the ladle of your silver spoon. You cannot tell us of your burdened life for it is the callused hand who has carried your strife. Copyright, Kevin V. Reese, 2004 |
