Samuel Lickingston,
nothing more than a black lab,
A mixture at that.
No, he was more.

If in silent tears I cried
He would sense it,
roll his head neath my hand,
our brown eyes would meet
And he’d take in all the pain.

One could call him our guardian angel,
Playing tricks on us at night.
By the early bedding teen
he would sleep on our son’s right.
Sam was his.
All his.

As the night hours deepened
he’d sneak to the floor by our bed,
and rest in peace
until little trips we made.
He followed.  He was ours.
All ours.

Adolescent daughter, full of needs,
had trained him once, but he
needed no lead.
When she went to bed, he was at her side
Heeling, healing.   He was hers.
All hers.

He was a guardian who shared two homes,
ours and Grandma’s across the field.
Nightowl widow crawled in bed
while obstinate canine snuck in.
He was hers until morning light.

At least she thought…

Through the field once again,
he became mine, by my side
'til we awoke;
then, his, all his
And hers, all hers.

He never forgot Grandma
so through the field once again
To Grandma’s.
She awakened by his side.

     When crawlers awoke,
     he was at each bedside.
Sam let each one of us believe
     we were his,
     all his.

He played his cards as guardian canine
And safeguarded dreamful nights.

Sam was truly a blessing.  He is missed.

Cathy, this is the best you've written.  He is still your guardian angel.  Love you, sis

Sunshine,
   it's one of those things...

Jo,
You like it because you knew Sam.  No, I don't feel he is our guardian any longer.  He's probably off upstairs somewhere.

No, Cathy, that really isn't the reason I said that.  This was, in my book, the best.  Structurally, it was very well done.  Your message was very clear and you expressed yourself very well.   ....jo

I liked this. I have a dog that is getting to his ending years, I hope I will remember him with words as well spoken.

The spirit of an animal is not like a human spirit, but they do have them, take it from one who has seen. They aren't permanent in the way a human spirit is; they slowly fade. But if, as sometimes happens, that spirit chooses to remain near the people who nurtured the animal in life, it can go on and on, receiving strength from them and continuing.

It doesn't always happen that way -- Terry, Lady and Dumbdog (don't ask) aren't with me, but Blackie and Shadow are.....

Sam isn't there as a guardian, you're right about that...but may be near you as a continuance, on that side of things, of the loving bond that was there in life.

Sunshine,
I stopped in on your suggested post and glad I did.  Thank you for sharing those personal times in your life.  It helped.
              Thanks again.

Titia,
What a couple of cuties they were.  They look like they had a lot of character and full of love.
I can understand missing them...  Thanks for sharing them with me.
