But You Are . . . . . .

While the leaf yet dangles on the branch
And has enough life to determine
The direction of its course
Let it bathe a bit in the sunlight
And be lifted by its own breeze

Do not pluck it from the
Fiber of its roots
nor try to nurture the color
And texture of a dying leaf
But let it drift to earth in its own time

And do not pluck me from my tethered bark
For I know when my season will end

Let me determine where I will fall
And who will cradle me in  my weakness.
For what you desire for me may not be
What I desire for myself

Do not be anchored to a mind that no longer
recognizes your face
For to me, all seasons will be equal
And I will know neither happiness
nor sadness,
nor will I feel lonely or forgotten.
I will be as a leaf, dancing in the sun
Unknowing of the hour or the day

Let my grandchildren remember me
In the crimson colors of autumn
And not in the grays of January

Do not try to bear the weight of my existence,
But rather place your arms around
The little buds that reach upward
toward a new season

And please do not ever
let these words
fall upon my ears

“But you are my mother”

Oh Liz, what beautiful feelings you've expressed here, they really touch my heart and I recognize you so well in them (and I can find myself in them too)

Hugs and knuffels, Titia

Like scattered leaves...my words will flow

Bittersweet feelings in this write Liz...
You have such talent putting your thoughts to paper.

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back

I understand this very well, and quite deeply, Lady Santos.  When reaching low, you hit a new high...

As ever, even your free verse retains a classical reverence...

Amazingly beautiful, as is your courage and your heart.  Thank you, once again, for sharing your words of wisdom and strong faith.  Love to you always.

Liz that is a thought that goes through my mind once a day - once a day!  Comparing us to becoming a fragile leaf that wishes to fall when it falls is correct!  Not always do they know what is good for us, and I am only praying I am feisty enough to tell them so!  Damn, I hate getting older, hate it! You know one good thing is we all have each other now to rally around when we need someone to speak on our behalf that truly knows right?
