Where’s Daddy?

Young son…
search the hall for your answers.
Search the pictures for consolation.

Look upon him.
He held you tightly
before rushing away.

Where is he now?
Search the shadows
settling upon your bedroom wall.

Look in the those boots
covered in mud
still in the olive drab bag
that came home alone.

Search the case on the mantle
that holds tenderly
that delicate field of blue.

Look upon the stars there
dancing amidst the azure canvas,
radiant behind the weeping glass.

Is he there?

Search the drawer
next to your sleeping mother.
Find the medals,
the ribbons,
the letters, and
the fading pictures.

Is he there?
Did you find him?

There he is!
Tucked away inside.

Deep inside
your young and tender heart
void of innocence
the day the telegram came.

There he is
in the shadows,
the flag,
the medals,
and the boots.

There he is!
You’ve found him!

Now,
trace the letters of his name
from this granite wall,
alone,
so far from home.

Yet, older this young man knows
His ageless father is everywhere…

In every home.
In every prayer.

Ever silent.
Ever protecting.

And, amidst his duties
he has watched you grow,
waiting to hold you,
once again,
tighter than ever before.

There among heroes.
You have found him.
Never shall he be lost again.

He is with you always.
He never really left.

This one caught me right in the heart, such sorrow, such tenderness, and such respect.  Now I must pick my heart up off the floor.

Best to you -- Susan
