Surrounded by nothing recognizable,
But irritation
Sharp colors,  unfamiliar voices
Light and sound, alarmings
Loud as thunder;
In absence of wren-scold and dove coo,
Orphaned from flower scent
Becoming bored as its mother
Who ponders if is five potato
Pounds enough to make
The stretch of weekly meals?
*
To get away to where, for what cause:
Child, restless in its mother arms
Place of  safe, and comfort dwell,
Yet it wiggles to be free
From what it knows, desires
Advancing, towards a thing
It knows not well to fear.
*
Something calls past ends of hands,
That beckons wizards come to play.
Those still, in dress of buntings
Draped in moons and stars;
That think to snap a wand
(like cry) when lost in wilder realms,
Will make its Merlin (mother) reappear.

Ice, I watch them, too, and try to imagine/remember their world.  And sometimes I still do this:
Yet it wiggles to be free
From what it knows, desires
Advancing, towards a thing
It knows not well to fear.

Thought-provoking write... ~K~

Yup, you captured them

sweet little things

It amazes me that when they become adults, we just can't treasure their humanity quite the same.  This just can't be right.

Ice -- I've got a couple of those yearlings myself, and I definitely appreciate your poem's depth of understanding.  Beautifully written.
