While You Turn To Sleep

Your hair spills careless over the pillow,
just a shimmer, liquid lace flowing
silent in the curtained moonlight.
One lock has strayed across your cheek;
it turns gently with each breath,
while your face lightens, eyes quiet now,
closing slowly as you drift into sleep.
The strain of day is softening as I watch
each care drift off into the shadows,
leave you free to dream until the morning.

I love you even more in these quiet times,
a joy to watch you turn your daytime
into night, by the simple magic of sleep.
I cannot touch, moved beyond moving
by the curves of you, made lovelier
by these few light turns of cloth that
frame your warmth, whisper to me
of skin so near, so soft beneath them.

Your trembling breath tells me that
you’re asleep now, it’s time for me
to sleep as well; or it could be I’m
asleep already, dreaming you again
so many miles and hills away,
and a scene I’ll never see.
