Dealer's Choice

Grief is unpredictable

Shattering families
It turns lovers into strangers
Who’ve nothing in common
But the bleakness it wraps them in

It can also forge
Unsought, unbreakable bonds
Between those who know its searing
And seek to survive its fires

It steals breath from lungs
And disconnects a beating heart
Before disappearing
Leaving welcome numb
Only to wage a sneak attack
That drains color from a day

With screech and screams
It is writhing prima donna
Demanding center stage
Portraying the agonies of the damned

Then walks in dignified silence
Unobtrusive to all
But discerning eyes

Preparation for its arrival
Does not lessen its capriciousness
There’s no way to predict
What hand might be yours

Its only consistency
Is its reluctance to leave

how I feel...today...

I have felt the many disguises grief takes on...

I enjoyed your series  from the onset.

Laura, this is masterful....this trio of poems has to be one of the best works I've seen in this site.

In the past you've shared with me the feeling that your poetry doesn't compare to that of the quality poets here.... Don't be saying that any more, Suthern gal -- you just proved you are one of them.

I was riveted to these poems from the first line to the last, simply couldn't pause to reply to one before going on to the next. Well done!

You nailed it m'friend, simply nailed it.  I wish I could say I don't know this but I do, and it stings again with your words here, for one thing is certain the predictability of knowing its persistance.

I do believe in all I have read of yours this is about the most excellent work you have done in my opinion.

Southern,

one can certainly tell from these writings that you have experienced grief first hand.

Wishing you peace, friend.

I have to ditto that above accolades..this series is indeed among your best work...powerful expression with a grasp of vocabulary that speaks profoundly...and a depth of emotion that defines all thats been lost and denied.

The irony is in knowing that to write from this depth, one has known this sorrow far too often.  You speak for those that may not have the expression of gifted pen.

Sweet lady,
I must remind you how happy I am that you are here. You know more than I would wish for you and share more than I could ask. Thank you.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I cannot tell you how much your responses mean to me... I can only say I cherish each and every one. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you... I'm stunned and humbled that so many of you have taken the time to read and respond to all 3 parts... I'm grateful for you... collectively and individually. *S* THANK YOU!!!

This is where our strength must endure.

I am weeping inside
For here is where
  a momentary touch
can pave the way towards healing

Boy do I know this one.
I lost friends (that needed to be lost, sadly, anyway) from grieving...
but I gained the closest and truest friends from it, also.
It's strange how it completely alters your perspectives in life...

I've got these three in my library now...

Ruth, I read this back in June...
but it was much too...true...

and I found myself unable to say
what I wanted to say...

and still do.

You, my dear, have a gift.
