In the returning The land was fully green with spring, There was bounty throughout the land Even as the furrowed fields stood ready The game came grazing near at hand And the bushes were full of berry, Then there were her parents waiting Xing. It was an unexpected reunion That filled her with mixed emotion; The days had made her more than a year older She had grown beneath Cain’s kind cares And her spirit more strong and bolder, Xing was now of Cain and not theirs; Sold to a stranger and then abandoned. There were men sent to unload the purchased grain But only her parents to greet her at the train, But she left them there and went home Troubled with many a disturbed thought And found Cain with hoe in field alone Where she gave him the things she brought From city from the cousin of Master Cain. He read the letter and when that was done Told Xing that now for her was freedom And placed the emeralds in her hand Leaving her a rich woman of sixteen years; Walking to his house her left her there to stand Filled with doubt and growing fears Tears filled her eyes beneath the noon sun. He hadn’t told her to stay or to go Freedom was not something that she did know From obedient child to serving girl To woman with a will all her own Allowed to make her way within the world But did Xing still have a place to call home, She went to watch Cain through the window. Xing had always thought of Cain as stoic Calmly, bravely accepting be he well or sick, There looking through the small window pane Saw him on his humble bed lying Almost as his will had been slain Still holding the letter as he was crying, So unlike the Cain that was to her heroic. The free Xing came and set by his side Asking him why he collapsed and cried, Cain told her of the love he had lost To return to this peaceful land of strife. Xing then offered the emeralds as dowry cost If he would take her as his wife Promising to ever stay by his side. So Xing passed from girl to slave to lady Cain Evermore on that land to remain, And what of the dowry cost? Into the well they were tossed. Gloom |
