Knees sunk in black dirt,
she is surrounded
by hollyhocks in blushed-bloom.
Green hands tug expertly at weeds.
She pretends to dwell here,
clinging to these roots,
protected by towering stalks.

Her hair is undone today.
Long tendrils sweep the soil,
lengthen in the sun. Grapevines intertwine
with gray strands. Slipknots adorn ankles.
A smile finds itself a place.

Morning brings a new sunflower
to the garden.
