Balladeer and Toerag,
Were digging a ditch in the Park.
They were sweating as they dug,
Because they were working hard.

LongJohn, their supervisor
Was standing to one side,
Making sure they dug the ditch
Sufficiently deep and wide.

While Balladeer took a break
Toerag asked his boss, LJ
Why did they have to dig,
While LongJohn got so much pay?

“Intelligence!” was the response
Toe received in explanation.
When Toe asked what that meant,
LJ gave a demonstration.

Long John held up his hand
In front of an elm tree growing there,
And said, “Toe, hit my hand with your shovel
As hard as you can bear.”

So Toerag swung his shovel hard
Hoping to make ol' Long John pay,
But just before the shovel struck him,
Long John pulled his hand away.

Toe’s shovel rang out loud
When it made contact with that tree
And the vibrations in the handle
Made Toerag’s hands both sting.

Long John then said, “Toe,
Now do you see what I meant,
When I said the difference between us,
Was our intelligence?”

With that Long John walked away,
To supervise another crew.
When ‘Deer came back he asked Toe,
“What was the boss just saying to you?”

Toerag explained the reason why
Only he and ‘Deer were doing the labor,
Was because of something called intelligence,
And he’d explain it to ‘Deer as a favor.

Toe told ‘Deer to pick up his shovel,
And he’d soon understand,
As Toe held his hand in front of his face,
And said, “Now ‘Deer, just hit my hand.”

Yep – Them’s some right intelligent fellers in my Parks Department.

Ruth - I wouldn't need a Parks Department if you were in my city - those parks would be beautiful just by having you there.

Sy - I suspect there will be a lot of blustering from Toe over this one - heh. Revenge is sweet.

This is better than watching the soaps, but maybe then again, you three are the soaps, slipping and sliding all over the place! Too good... Watch your head, you'd better duck for what might be coming next!

Ah, I remember it well....all except the part about you being the boss. Poor Toe had to eat pudding and applesauce for a month. Thanks for bringing back such a fond memory, sailor
