I realize I've lost you,
Our relationship is finally at it's end.
That I've never been there for you.
I would like for us, at least, to part as friends.

I'd like to leave you pleasant memories,
So that when you think of me, at least you'll smile.
And the pleasure of your presence...
Might ride with me a many lonely mile.

I guess a person's foolish
When they wrestle things that were not meant to be.
A wolf is not a house-pet,
Nor an eagle happy till it's soaring free.

A sunset's not a sunset,
Until you see it sinking in the West.
And a man is not a man, dear-
Unless he's doing what he does the best.

So if I were an artist...
The picture that I'd paint would find me gone.
But I'd put someone with you-
Darling, I could not leave you alone.

He'd be kind and understanding...
With a gentle voice, and patient, listening ear.
With a strong and stable presence,
That would comfort you in times of doubts and fear...

He would win your heart forever...
Until even all my memories would cease.
And the pain of bitter seasons...
At last would all melt into lasting peace.

This is so moving.  Deep from the heart.  Way to go Gunslinger.
Sad, and so well written.  The last stanza was a perfect close.

Hi cowboy....yet another wonderful story you tell..
sad and melancholy but told so well...
and a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do.
