For the Kids It started yesterday, the remembering today. Yesterday was when I cried, knowing today I'd have to be strong, for the kids . . . the kids, who are grown now, have children of their own . . . but yesterday I had to cry, so I could be strong today as we lay you down in your flowery bed . . . I had to be strong, for the kids, so I couldn't cry today, not today. So forgive me, it's the heat of the sun causing sweat on my cheeks, like tears falling to the ground, because I couldn't cry today . . . not today . . . for the kids. w. james beard, jr.
