It's been a greasy rain all day
trying to wash the curdled memories of other holidays
away from acid pits of soft recalled emotion;
if I could trust myself,
and if I had time,
today I would drive
down to where the Mother ocean
crashes on the palisades testing their resolve,
below the sullen weather beaten towers
watching for attack
from sea wolves that hunted
here along the convoy tracks
more than a half century ago.
I feel as useful as the towers,
and about as optimistic,
both remaindered relics
of a world we helped exist
but one that doesn't even make sense
in the history books today.
I think it's time I go away awhile,
maybe walk out in the desert and decide
if when I'm tired I should turn around,
or just keep going on until I turn to dust
and let the endless gritty wind
that washes through each night in that barren consolation,
the living wind that swallowed up entire civilizations,
take one more tired used up soul
that's less than litter on the trails of desolation.

I'll put the metaphors on freeze dry and keep them for some future read. Excellent

Icebox, this is an intriguing read in that you address something that has been on my mind lately.  My question always gets answered with......you need to just keep creating whatever it is you can and in the creation there is something positive that occurs -- you know, the law of attraction...   I've read this poem of yours four times now -- so much depth.  Like you, I would the sea wolves still roamed; and waves, their restless sorrow's froathy foam, dissipate to calm reflective blue.

This is too far away from the ocean, I hope you will turn around.

I can relate to this. For me, it's walking into the woods in a blizzard, and leaving no trail.
Glad you stay around, to keep us all on our toes.
