The Conversation Imagined

He says he doesn’t see,
not quite past that first strand
of cobwebs that hide the corners,
but he listens,
his blue eyes full
and I say again
what I can only measure
with a poet’s eye.

I tell him that my heart
yearns for more days,
that I feel time next to me
pushing me against myself
and my skin feels so thin.

He touches my arms,
runs his finger down the blue vein
and lingers in the curve inside my elbow,
telling me he understands how this skin
has changed
and dew no longer clings
but must be slathered on daily
drenched but still it thirsts
for intensive care, yes
he sees that.

But that is not it I say,
that is only a layer that is tangible,
I am hidden in here with all these years
filled up and bloated with things
that need to be mentioned
because they sing to me
and fill me to bursting.

He cocks his head and turns away
from my face that has become too open
and I know it is easier for him to enrapture
a flower and pull it into a statement
that says how fragile time is
but glorious now—don’t you see how glorious
before the turning down of petal
the falling crisp departure of leaf
this is where I put my heart each day
for I make happiness
then watch it wither on some table,
he says this with his hunched shoulders.

And I understand how we each capture
this golden vibrant life
with a different grasp
and as much as I want him to pierce
my soul and see me naked and unadorned
I also want to stay here
pure and only me

for I have not even ventured all the way
and can only take tall truth
in increments that fit my skin

and even then I look at the bubble that bursts
and think
can this be mine?
---------
a repost to remember what is still true

I am just a traveler looking for a home, finding I carry it around with me, and sometimes it's just too heavy.

The hopes and dreams we have, like so many
rose petals pressed between the pages

Can only flourish, when both the sun is vibrant,
and the rain plenty

Of course, a little manure can go a long way...

Sorry ‘bout that last part Martie

I thought maybe a little giggle,
along with a smile, might help...

I loved this, along with all the rest

(big angel hugs) This is so lightly heartbreaking, sweet friend, ever too often I try to understand what the spirits of my lost friends want to discuss to me and I can only imagine it as it is vague as the vapor over the mountains on an April day! (sad sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, I send angel comfort hugs your way, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

This...is quality. Such a beautiful look inside, at the way you love and live and look at the progression of life, all in one still-life scene.

You work magic, Martie.

Much depth in this.  Made me wonder how many conversations occur between two people when only one is actually involved and the other is just a voice in that person's head.

My favorite bit in a poem full to the brim with hard/vague images that lend a consistent, smooth, real feeling to me as a reader. It flows with emotion and several visuals that make it... real.

Very nice Martie. Glad I caught this.

I logged on today with the intention of posting a poem about aging... but after getting lost in your words, I know mine need to go home and grow up a bit to even deserve a place in your shadow. *S*

Magnificent work!

Martie
A most excellent read...

I was going to put in quotes the most outstanding stanzas and phrases, but such as they are, all are far to good to seperate from the next...I would have to copy the whole poem to do it justice....no extra fillers in this poem, that's for sure..

This is a love poem, as I understand it..
Something tells me it is not imagined at all,
that the "he" in this is real, or am I wrong and perhaps you wish he was?
A man that is truly in love with a woman does not see her flaws, especially those that time has scribbled on her skin.
*
Anyway, this poem to me is like a good piece of music when the violinest asks a question and the chello answers, or perhaps like the other day when I heard two pileateds calling...the female asked and the male aswered..sorry, I am nutcase, I hear poetry in all kinds of sounds...
Truly enjoyed this, gonna leave now before this becomes a longer novel...

I keep learning.  You've still got a lot of teaching to do.  Even when we read what was laid down before, new passages open...
