I dont hate you Banging on my arm You designed to attract my attention and My shoulder is bruised I ache But I dont hate you How can I hate something of life You are my way out The others have classes all the year And week by week they change But you are my friend You stay with me Talking of Class 53 In the morning you keep me fit Later I learn of pain Tomorrow you give me a break The pain first Then I ache But you always there On my shoulder In my heart In my memory Dave ************************************************ In the Detention Quarters in Portsmouth Royal Naval Barracks those who have been sentenced twice to Detention were placed in Class 53. Under Naval Regulations everyone in Detention progressed on a defined week by week set of rules laid down under law. How many years have 53 weeks and so we learn how the Services work. So these guys would serve out extended sentences Of nothing under any rules, because with 52 weeks in a year, there was no week 53. Gym and doubling with a .303 rifle day after day were for week 1, but week after week it kept their minds off the legality, and they weren't allowed to communicate to anyone at all. I am talking back in the late 60's I should say. I assume of course we have left these barbaric practices now Dave |

Memories that linger and surface at times. Thank you for sharing, Dave. Barbaric habits have not yet been cancelled ....other places other men, same pain of the flesh and same aching hearts. Love, Margherita |

Thanks all. I wasn't on 53, but being a rebel I made damn certain I got close enough to give some news, pass a message and raise 2 fingers in as much as I was allowed, and they could have me if they wanted. The real classic for me, was that after I came out, I put myself for as the Welface Representative for 500 guys and I was appointed for that year and the next, and they included the Royal Marines based in Chatham. I still have the Pewter Mug. A saga in some guy's book is about a dartboard, and I can still remember fighting for against a Royal Navy Commander and a Chief Petty Officer to get the guys a second dartboard. Dave |
