I stood there in the shadows,
Looking through her window pane.
As she read my farewell letter,
And the teardrops fell like rain.

Then I swung into my saddle,
Turned my horse into the wind.
And I rode away in sorrow-
For I'd not return again.

There never was a chance for us-
We neither one were free.
I never could be there for her,
Nor she be there for me.

Our love notes spoke of meeting-
But we knew we did not dare...
For parting would be far too hard-
For either one to bear...

But even as I ride tonight-
Out in the wind and rain...
It seems I almost hear her voice,
Still calling out my name.

I dream of drinking coffee-
As I stare into her eyes...
I see her smiling features,
Then I sadly realize-

That once again I'm dreaming-
And our love can never be.
They say if you can't hold them,
You had better set them free.

So fly away, sweet memory...
Why are you haunting me?
Again I'll mount and ride away,
From love that cannot be.

This is sad and beautiful.  Full of all those things I love about your poetry. Beautiful. I already said that, but it deserves it twice.  Perfect meter, perfect flow, perfect sentiment.

Well done slinger.  I like this one.  I do not use a horse....I just hit the gas.
