His hand would have shaped the popover
we were about to eat
had we entered the restaurant;

Standing outside waiting for entrance
he walked up to me, extending
what seemed to be proud hands.

He didn’t look the part of man in need,
wearing well kept brown coat,
shaven, and polished shoes.

Extended hands, his;
Turned head, mine.
We had spoken silent volumes.

In good posture,
he walked away.

Down the street,
I saw him sit upon concrete,
changing into fresh white socks.

I wondered
how many blocks he’d walk
with shoulders poised

In pride.

Ahh, dear Sadelite, I think this is a glimpse into a new situation due to new poverty of people who used to have other standards. The pride is there ... the posture. And those volumes you spoke hold an injured heart surely, a hidden despair ... that may show only when they are on their own.
