Like a sneaky little poltergeist
Darting, inches out of sight.
Staying well within the shadows
Coming out by dark of night.
Like a vague unwelcome odor
Telling secrets in the air,
Though you may not even know it friend,
Doubt is always there.
The one you love comes home at night
Though at times he’s running late.
You tell yourself…”It’s business”,
And you sit alone and wait.
The clock moves in slow-motion,
As the hours come and go.
Pretty soon you’re dialing numbers.
And your hand is shaking so.
An accident, you’re thinking
Or trouble with his car.
But doubt keeps trying to tell you
Just how gullible you are.
He’s with another woman,
Doubt is whispering in your ear.
And quickly it’s becoming
The only thing you hear.
By the time you hear his footfalls
Coming slowly up the walk.
You’re prepared to tell him,
“Baby we have got to have a talk!”
But he tells you he was working late,
And he doesn’t want to fight.
So you push the doubt away, once more,
Just a little out of sight.
