Bats scatter from the ruined church As the first shell strikes. Bugles sound.. Ladders everywhere As a handful of men Try to defend the indefensible. Two hundred fifty Against three thousand. A sixty minute assault ends With pools of black blood Beside a fur hat... A huge knife stuck defiantly In a sickroom wall. The cold March wind Made warm by the funeral pyres. |
