Pigtail Priorities (as it should be)

There are moments
of remembrance
when old meet young on
grounds of common

Remembrance for elders
to make memories
to come
for the young…

As it should be

Tonight [nights ago] I experienced
(again)
a déjà vu of sorts

Encompassing three
generations ~
it was remarkable…

Granddaughter asked,
“will you do my hair?”
and in gathering brush
and comb,
she continued
“into pigtails, please?”

So I asked if, before I
honored this request,
if I may, just please,
brush her hair
for a little while,
to play with silken texture,

while intermittently rubbing
her back, massaging
her shoulders

As I used to do
with my daughters
when they were young
and eight years old…

As my mother did for me…

As it should be.

Then, the ice storm raged outside
but we were close and warm
that night,
talking of possible
school closings on the morrow…
perhaps no work, either…

Moments wend ways
toward memories;
she shifted, sat comfortably
in my lap,
with the dog at her feet,
allowing me time
to sift my fingers,
feeling silk
before I started plaiting
hair into braids she
wanted
for
bedtime…

she suddenly said
“let me do your hair”…
I smiled at the
additional memories to
be made

Just as I had allowed
my girls
and my mother had
allowed with me

So we switched places,
her comments on
my short, short hair,
noting gray

For she became
the pretend beautician,
and I her client…

She mimicked washing
her tiny fingers
working over my scalp,
then feigned to cut
my invisible tresses, fingers
pretending to scissor along the
nape of my neck
sending delicious shivery
goosebumps
down my back,
onto my arms and legs…

Just as I remembered…

As I shivered,
she giggled…

A memory was born on
laughter
which holds echoes of
pasts

As it should be

Thank you for painting these watercolour memories that are so similar to my own...I feel a bit misty-eyed right now.

You truly have a gift, dear poetess.

Loves 'n hugs,

Multiple layers that build and never collapse,
A woven tapestry of pure love threads
"as it should be"
A love poem of  innocence and honesty
Expressed beautifully...
"as it should be"
Made me warm all over..(I think I melted a little)
Thank you Karilea

Sissy

One of the things I miss most, of my time with Michelle, is doing her hair.  My granddaughter's hair isn't long enough yet, but I can feel the goosbumps coming.  It is so precious this closeness between woman and girls...thank you for reminding me with this lovely poem.  Hugs!

You said it quite perfectly
"As it should be"

May it always be so

Wonderfully touching- even though I have never had pig tails- that is one word isn't it. Shows you what I know. And you talk about short short hair- geeez I just ask the person cutting hair to do the best they can with what I do not have. Now that is some imagination.

Truly a vividly poignant snapshot of life

Awww Karilea, this is beautiful. I find myself doing to Daniel(not braiding his hair off course heh)as my mum did for me like the way she used to wake me in the morning. I miss those days.

Thanks for taking me back.

Hello my friend (see? back as promised! even though I'm sick with sinusitis and surrounded by boxes) --

this is so sweet and true, too, so many moms will relate to this one. My daughter loves when I play with her hair, although I've still not figured out the french braid thing
and she puts tiny braids in mine that look like dreadlocks by the time she's done! heh

Anyway, wanted to drop by and say "HI!"
