It was... |

It was, creaking swings, 5-cent lemonade, red wagons crossing cracks, sticks, stones, mother’s backs. It was musty smells beneath a house, watching for a rat...a mouse. Pennies lying near the street, Ice cream frozen...such a treat. It was trains that moved through the night, shining distantly, a guiding light. Hearing the hum of mighty diesels, bats in a belfry, bells in white steeples. Pancakes in November, ohh so tasty, made with care and never hasty. Bacon so crisp and oh so lean, a small tongue licks a huge plate clean. Washboards and soap made of lye, such a strange smell, squinting an eye. Pockets with pennies to buy some pop, oh goodness and golly, can we stop? A dime was a treasure, more than a buck. Wheat pennies shining, giving us luck. TV was black and channels were few, what did a kid think of to do? A sandbox that shared a cat’s surprise where boys yelled their loud battle cries. Dresses were all that a girl could wear, Jeans were a no-no, they didn’t dare. Dinner was served sharply at Six as the spuds were buttered and mixed. Those were the days, when home was a home, when buffalo walked, when cowboys still roamed. Things were much simpler, there weren’t any drugs... And when bedtime came, there were many hugs... Goodnight Robert, Billy and Sue, See ya tomorrow, we’re havin’ beef stew!!! |

Sometimes I wish I was growing up in those days. Heaven knows how many times I've pointed a 12 gauge at the front door... |

Sounds like "Willoughby", Barry... when there was probably more time to focus on the better aspects of life rather than be preoccupied with the worse ones... Thanks for the episode. -MVS You CAN make a difference: |

what better way to rememember those fond bygone days...they simply were...simple...loved the write...it flowed like a familiar old song on a red and silver transistor radio (no headphone required...batteries not included) |

It's funny how the new generation might look back at our nostalgia, and, maybe even feel sorry for us So little do they know... lol I thought it was a heck of time to grow up! And if I had to do it all over again, I think I'd go right back there There was still so much, that I missed You did great here Barry You did all us 45's proud, you did! |

Yes, I remember those days well. I also remember hitch-hiking south to Florida from Canada and getting a job on a shrimp boat. Kids couldn't do things like that now. Especially since 911. Besides, it's unlikely you could coax them away from Video games and wide-screen TVs... yada, yada, yada! Grover. |

so weird how things are different now... Its rare to find families that aren't broken and divorced now. And parents aren't teaching us kids and teens what to do and how to act... then they can't see what the problem is. Agh people drive me crazy lol A good trip to a time and place I never knew... but have enjoyed visiting Always, Alyssa He was a man of sorrows |

Barry, I do remember those days well. It's sad that things have changed so much with families nowadays. I love the way you wrote this one, Barry. Hugs Ethel |

"Those were the days, when home was a home, when buffalo walked, when cowboys still roamed. Things were much simpler, there weren’t any drugs... And when bedtime came, there were many hugs..." Sounds wonderful... "sit on top of the world and tell me how you feel...'cause what you feel is what I feel for you.." |

My goodness Barry! ~ I had to read this three times so I could triple my pleasure! Your nostalgic pieces are beyond compare! ~ as well as your gothic poems, poems of love and passion, and the ones on the days of yore! You know I'm a fanatical fan of yores, I mean "yours"! Appreciative hugs and a great big smile! Linda [This message has been edited by Earth Angel (02-23-2004 12:43 PM).] |
