I spent the day with my youngest children; we made a game of throwing knives at a target painted on an old slice of a tree long consumed in keeping me warm. I wondered about the harm of teaching such a skill, until they each looked at me with a caution that I be careful; I'd brought out a dozen knives, each different, all survivors of hard use, made by hand to suit tasks they wisely never asked about, and we played, me terribly from neglect they carefully and with respect reminded me quickly the young really can learn new tricks; each found a favorite they now think of as a friend by which they learned the Zen of becoming flight; the day turned bitter cold, but in the end was filled with giggles and laughter, and I believe that was all of what I was after, before they grew too old my soul needed to hold them in a way I understood. ©2004 by icebox |

Icebox, this reminded me of a picture I have in my head of my grandfather teaching me how to sharpen knives before we scaled fish. That was a precious memory. Thank you for your wonderful work. |

I read this and read it again. And again. I didn't want it to be over. Just like those moments-- you photograph the soul, m'friend. and btw? This? "the Zen of becoming flight;" wow. You just reminded me and I didn't even know I'd forgotten. Hope it's like riding a bicycle. |

"but in the end was filled with giggles and laughter, and I believe that was all of what I was after, before they grew too old my soul needed to hold them in a way I understood." God what a loving, giving soul you are! Hugs~ ~ Whatever our souls are made of, |
