Cheating the Race Just suppose tomorrow tonight never came, Yet Day stayed in your pocket to be hidden. Suppose that sleep never rested our stress, Yet we somehow survived the frigid love we give. Tonight lasts only as long as our eyes will allow; Will you close them for just a moment longer? Your feelings last only as long as you heart allows; Will you transfuse love into my veins tonight? Let’s cradle love in child’s games and words, “You’re pretty cute” “You too!” We’ll fade just like our younger games of hopscotch, But let’s create our own grown-up games today. Today lasts only as long as your hand will allow, So don’t let go of my fingers sooner than I fall. Your feelings last only as long as our previous kiss, Do you remember when I first fell? (It was just last year) What’s that shining in your squinted eyes? Just the sun I suppose, just my hopeless hope. Are your eyes bluer or has the sky finally awoken? The sky lives again, but more than you and I. The blue sky canvases the heavens longer than I thought, So don’t close your eyes and miss this sight again. The sun will blind us just like before last night, Or Maybe we just got our sight back again…all I see is you. |
