She explained love to him one night Once the bottle had been half emptied And her tongue had been liberated From the confinement of sobriety He watched her lips move As she spoke in almost a whisper Like it was her own little secret But secretly she wanted everyone to know, “Love is the ocean on a clear summer night It is the moon’s pull on the water. . .” He furrowed his brow in a look of confusion Because he had seen the ocean But had yet to see a love that compared. “Love is feeling all of this beauty And knowing that you alone do not deserve it.” And he saw the moon’s reflection in her eyes And he felt autumn’s air against his skin And he heard music from another room And he spoke ever so softly, “I do not deserve it.” |
