Long Forgotten

How long is after I am forgotten?

My songs are grounded in old man's gravel
But I do not mine them into hymns
That loft up from the basement to the floor
Where my great-grandson will hear them and remember.

Nor have I gathered grandchildren to demonstrate
How once I shaved with a straight razor,
Or told them how a mad cow blocked the road
One day as my sister and I walked home from school.

The memories of those before me, I still keep.
For a while, I can yet speak of them.
Still, when everyone speaks,
The words must crowd themselves
Into the chatter.
Who has time to listen and remember?

How long is
After I am forgotten?
