quilts and kittens homemade dresses
hand tatted lace. lilac bushes lavender scent
hollyhocks beside the fence. count the years
one to seven in robin's nests and comic books.
hopscotch skip sidewalk cracks
mummy’s got cookies cooling in the kitchen.

clouded mind approaching storm
run and hide bolt the door lightning strikes
and thunder roars. eight nine ten
monsoons at eleven
brothers cowering in their cots.
dead geraniums in the basement les fleurs du mal
she stalks at night with pruning shears.

pavement cracks and broken backs
alice through the looking glass stacks
and stacks stacks of books with spines and tapes
of music fill the sanctuary twelve
till closing time emancipation
asylum from pitiless streets
and her dark disease.
