ONE LAST NAIL Bare branches all entangled sodden leaves for a floor I fear the fog is getting thick and my feet are getting sore But somewhere in the distance I heard a string quartet play I left the path to try and find them and so I lost my way I stopped to rest sometime later when the winds began to wail My name-saint's ghost appeared for me and gave me a bloody nail Though I tried so hard to please her in the dirt, down on my knees, dead fingers softly brushed my face and my tears began to freeze. And I trembled like a virgin before her lover unclothed I knew then my heart was open my soul lay naked and exposed there before the Creator clinging to the seventh veil as she slowly raised the hammer to drive home one more nail And I marvelled at the leaves as they danced over the sea I put our name inside a bottle and then I set it free Holding hands we spoke in silence understanding what wasn't said And she smiled down at me sadly as she craddled my head I learned then love was greater although she seemed far to frail without the least sign of effort she drew out every nail Thinking on what I knew of love and all the might-have-beens, I wasted acting like a schoolgirl crying and making scenes. I turned to her for comfort as we sat there side by side Then she spoke to me of the day she watched helpless as he died and her tears for the traitor, knowing hatred would prevail. And knowing then how I'd failed her I offered her one last nail I learned then love was greater when the winds began to wail as she slowly raised the hammer I offered her one last nail. Maddy |

When I read this I felt an ache. There is a heaviness in my heart for a person I know, and this made me think of that person. Very painful to read, but so true to life's experiences. Love, Terri~ [This message has been edited by SharaRose (11-18-2003 06:30 PM).] |
