Not so Smart

I’ve never been too smart to know what’s within me,
Never quite seen through the dusted window pane.
Always leeching from others to reflect myself
In hopes of self-worth gained.

It was told me to find the light within
But that’s abstract, lighting a torch without  igniter or a match…

Once I met an artist who used dark to his advantage.
He stippled portraits beneath numerous layers of illusive black
And splattered brilliant paint atop, just so, that under skylight
The portrait’s soul bled through dark , a canvas apparition.

How I wish I could be that canvas
Painted with layers of dark.
Then shining upon me, the natural light
Would unveil the portrait within.

George Bernard Shaw once wrote that a surefire way of sculpting an elephant would be to first start with a large block of marble and then chip away everything that doesn't look like an elephant...same concept as your well written poem.

Great write...well done.

So smart and observant are you
To look for the portrait beneath the black
To see the light through and within;
This is not an easy thing to do
But I think you probably have the knack
Of the helping and caring you lend.

iliana,
i know why it's your favorite!   He was incredibly talented, wasn't he?  He was as much chemist as artist, and visa versa. Did he show you his technical books?

Sadie, no you have it wrong.  It is my favorite of yours because it is so well written -- and it really moved me! And, no I do not believe I saw the artist's tech. books.  We were fortunate just to see his art and would like to know what became of this talented man.

When I was at the local art museum about two years ago, I did see one piece of his.  Rather small canvas (maybe 4x4) considering the large room-sized ones we saw.   I don't think it was one of his stippled portraits, but probably couldn't tell anyway because there was no skylight.
