On an odd-named street Once a weeping willow tree grew large in the puzzled youth of me A canopy sheltering from a lie they’d bred shading tears I didn’t know to shed My friends and I would gather there and imagine another life in where the disappointment would not be heaped upon young shoulders to be later reaped The willow limbs would dance in spring in yellow-green where birds would sing Parent grackles would chase grey squirrels along large branches and around trunk burls This was a tree that I could climb and from a memory put down this rhyme It had a place in the youth of me that bitter-sweet old willow tree © 011404 (Thanks for the idea, Professor) |
