To The Palm of My Hand There is an awed silence that permeates everything in the minute hours just before dawn, a stillness that enshrouds me, and murmurs quietly within my soul. It cleaves at my heart, slicing in two what once was whole. Into this emptiness spills the remembrance of you. It is dark, chilled, and bitter, like coffee unremembered. I close my eyes and shudder before I swallow deeply from that cup. These are but yesterdays' phantoms. Why do they haunt me? The answers are not forthcoming this day. With shaking hands I pull out my lighter. My eyes caress it, and even in the murkiness I can easily discern the engraving cut into the metal. These were the words you spoke to me before the falling apart, before the ending of all things and dreams. A sigh slips from my lips. Were they ever more than an etching? Effortlessly I flip it open as I draw the next nail for my coffin from the half empty packet. How you abhorred this addiction. I can't say I blame you. However I've already given up so much. This I will cling to for yet a while longer. Rocking back and forth I press your gift close to the palm of my hand. Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history! |

EV, Hope you haven't tricked me again! I'm wondering if these are the poet's feelings! Could almost shed a tear here... Wonderful write-you grabbed me at the emotion. Catch you later sometime. Your friend, Sadelite |

"Effortlessly I flip it open as I draw the next nail for my coffin from the half empty packet." The whole write was simply engrossing. I really enjoyed it and, particularly the lines above, and the ending! |

However I've already given up so much. This I will cling to for yet a while longer. Rocking back and forth I press your gift close to the palm of my hand. Kevin, I sure am glad that I looked on the other page and found this. this is so sweet and very touching. Sometimes some of the memories just won't leavem, will they? That can be good, at times. ![]() Hugs ![]() Ethel |

Oh my goodness, this is very moving. I was hanging on every word until the end, knowing what was coming, but needing to savor the words that were taking me there. Very dramatic, dear, and I do cherrish this one, because it's familiar. Except, I don't smoke. I don't usually wake very early, either. And I haven't etched anything to anybody and they haven't etched to me... ![]() I really liked this, especially the particular words "coffee unremembered" (how creative) and the part where you say "another nail for my coffin". Great job! McLean |
